Seth Peterson, Illegal Firearm Possession, Iowa 2024

SIOUX CITY, IA – Seth Peterson, 30, of Alden, Iowa, is headed to federal prison for 71 months after admitting to illegally possessing a loaded handgun. Peterson was sentenced Friday, January 5, 2024, in federal court, bringing a close to a case stemming from a vandalism investigation that quickly revealed a deeper criminal profile.

The investigation, initially focused on reports of property damage, led authorities to scrutinize Peterson’s social media and, ultimately, his residence. A search uncovered a Taurus 9mm handgun – crucially, with the serial number deliberately scratched off – alongside drug paraphernalia. Peterson, already a convicted felon, freely admitted to owning the weapon while also confessing to ongoing methamphetamine and marijuana use, a combination that legally bars him from firearm ownership.

Peterson’s prior convictions aren’t minor offenses. Court records show he’d previously been found guilty of Aggravated Assault with a Dangerous Weapon, Aggravated Domestic Abuse Assault with the Intent or Display a Weapon, and Extortion – a clear pattern of violent behavior. This history, combined with his continued drug use, painted a dangerous picture for Judge Leonard T. Strand, who handed down the substantial 71-month sentence.

Assistant U.S. Attorney Patrick T. Greenwood successfully prosecuted the case, highlighting the collaborative effort of the Iowa Division of Narcotics Enforcement, the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF), and the Franklin County Sheriff’s Office. The investigation demonstrates a concerted push to remove prohibited individuals and illegal weapons from Iowa streets.

Federal authorities emphasize this case is part of Project Safe Neighborhoods (PSN), a broad initiative designed to reduce violent crime and gun violence by fostering trust within communities and focusing on strategic enforcement. The Department of Justice launched a strengthened version of PSN in 2021, prioritizing community engagement and measurable results in the fight against crime.

Peterson will remain in the custody of the U.S. Marshals Service until transferred to a federal prison. Following his imprisonment, he will face three years of supervised release. Unlike state systems, there is no parole in the federal system, meaning Peterson will serve the entirety of his 71-month sentence.
