PEORIA, IL – Tyler W. Massengill, 32, of Chillicothe, Illinois, confessed in federal court Thursday to deliberately torching the Planned Parenthood Peoria Health Center on January 15th. The admission came as Massengill waived his right to a grand jury indictment and pleaded guilty to one count of malicious use of fire and an explosive to damage, and attempt to damage, the facility.
According to court documents, Massengill, residing in the 1000 block of North Santa Fe Avenue, admitted to intentionally starting the blaze. The act sparked a joint investigation involving the FBI’s Springfield Field Office, the Peoria Police Department, the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF), and the Peoria Fire Department. He has been held in the custody of the United States Marshals since his arrest on January 24th.
The fire, a clear act of targeted violence, sent shockwaves through the Peoria community and ignited concerns about escalating threats against reproductive health services. While authorities haven’t publicly detailed a motive, the deliberate nature of the attack points to a calculated act. The investigation remains ongoing to determine if Massengill acted alone or as part of a larger network.
Magistrate Judge Jonathan E. Hawley presided over the guilty plea. Massengill now faces a grim future, with a mandatory minimum sentence of five years behind bars and the possibility of up to 20 years in federal prison. Beyond imprisonment, he could be subjected to three years of supervised release and a hefty fine of up to $250,000.
Assistant U.S. Attorney Ronald L. Hanna and Trial Attorney Erin Monju of the Civil Rights Division’s Criminal Section at the Department of Justice are prosecuting the case. The sentencing hearing is scheduled for July 6th at the U.S. Courthouse in Peoria, before U.S. District Court Judge James E. Shadid. Grimy Times will be there to cover the proceedings.
This case underscores the escalating threat of violence directed toward healthcare providers and the critical need for robust federal investigation and prosecution of such acts. The ATF’s involvement highlights the agency’s role in investigating arson and explosives-related crimes, particularly when they involve federally protected facilities. The Department of Justice is taking this matter seriously, and the prosecution will seek the maximum penalty allowed under the law.
