Washington Attorney’s Office Honors MMIP Awareness Day

SPOKANE, WA – The U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Eastern District of Washington has thrown its full support behind Missing or Murdered Indigenous Persons (MMIP) Awareness Day, marking May 5, 2024, as a day to honor and remember those lost and to address the ongoing crisis facing Native American communities.

U.S. Attorney Vanessa R. Waldref announced her participation in the observance, calling on all citizens to support tribal governments and communities. She has also welcomed Bree R. Blackhorse as an Assistant United States Attorney focused on MMIP cases within the region.

Attorney General Merrick B. Garland emphasized the need for continued efforts against violence in indigenous communities and human trafficking, noting the enduring trauma faced by victims and their families. Waldref echoed this sentiment, emphasizing justice and safety for tribal communities as a priority.

In recent months, the U.S. Attorney’s Office has engaged in significant activities to combat MMIPs, including hosting federal and tribal summits focused on defending tribal homelands and addressing environmental justice.

Waldref’s office also participated in a summit with the Washington State Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women and People Task Force, providing updates on federal efforts against MMIPs. This comprehensive approach aims to reduce violence and support victims while addressing the root causes of this crisis.
