Felon Jailed 41 Months for Gun Possession

SACRAMENTO, Calif. — Gabriel Joseph Detrant, 50, of Redding, has been sentenced to serve 41 months in prison for being a felon in possession of a firearm, a serious crime that puts lives at risk.

According to court documents, Detrant’s troubles with the law began on February 2, 2021, when law enforcement officers conducted a traffic stop of a vehicle he was driving in Redding. Detrant and his passenger fled on foot after being pulled over, leaving the officers to search the vehicle.

It was then that the officers found a Baikal Makarov, Model IJ-70 9 mm handgun loaded with eight rounds by the driver’s seat. Detrant was later found hiding nearby in possession of a magazine loaded with eight 9 mm rounds. This brazen display of disregard for the law would ultimately lead to his downfall.

Detrant’s status as a felon in possession of a firearm is no coincidence. He has multiple prior felony convictions, including a 2018 conviction in Shasta County for being a felon in possession of a firearm. It’s a cycle of crime that’s all too familiar in our communities.

This case is a stark reminder of the dangers of gun violence and the importance of holding accountable those who would seek to exploit loopholes in our laws. The investigation into Detrant’s crimes was a joint effort between the Shasta County District Attorney’s Office, the Redding Police Department, and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives.

Assistant United States Attorney Haddy Abouzeid prosecuted the case, ensuring that justice was served. This conviction is a testament to the tireless efforts of law enforcement and prosecutors who work tirelessly to keep our communities safe.

The case against Detrant is part of Project Safe Neighborhoods (PSN), a program aimed at reducing violent crime and gun violence. By fostering trust and legitimacy in our communities, supporting community-based organizations, and setting focused enforcement priorities, we can create safer neighborhoods for everyone.

Detrant’s sentence serves as a warning to those who would engage in similar crimes: the consequences will be severe. As we continue to work towards a safer future, we must remain vigilant in our efforts to hold accountable those who would seek to harm our communities.
