Colombia Native Charged with Reentry
SCRANTON – In a move that highlights the ongoing struggle to combat illegal immigration in the United States, 42-year-old David Leonardo Moreno Bernal, a native of Colombia, has been charged with reentering the country without permission.
According to the United States Attorney’s Office for the Middle District of Pennsylvania, Moreno Bernal was previously removed from the US on August 27, 2012. However, on April 25, 2024, he was encountered in Centre County, Pennsylvania.
The indictment alleges that Moreno Bernal reentered the US without having first obtained legal permission to do so. The matter was investigated by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement and Removal Operations (ERO).
Assistant United States Attorney Tatum Wilson is prosecuting the case, which carries a maximum penalty of 20 years of imprisonment, a term of supervised release following imprisonment, and a fine. A sentence following a finding of guilt is imposed by the Judge after consideration of the applicable federal sentencing statutes and the Federal Sentencing Guidelines.
While the indictment has been filed, it’s essential to note that indictments are only allegations, and all persons charged are presumed innocent until found guilty in court.
As the US continues to grapple with the issue of immigration, cases like this serve as a stark reminder of the consequences of breaking the law. The Grimy Times will continue to follow this case and provide updates as more information becomes available.
