A 28-year-old Washington DC woman has been convicted of kidnapping her roommate after a three-day trial in the Superior Court of the District of Columbia.
Antoinette Gilmore, 28, of Washington, DC was found guilty of kidnapping charges on [date] after a jury deliberated for just a few hours. Sentencing is scheduled for July 23, 2024.
The heinous crime took place on October 12, 2023, when the victim got into an argument with his roommate, defendant Gilmore, over a phone call. During the argument, the defendant told the victim she wanted him to move out of her apartment and agreed to pick him up from downtown to bring him back to her apartment so he could remove his belongings.
However, things took a dark turn when once inside the car, the defendant instructed her cousin to punch and beat the victim and take his belongings as she drove. The victim tried to get out of the car, but they locked the doors and trapped him from within. At one point, he was able to get the back door open and escape, but was chased down by the defendant’s cousin and dragged back into the car.
After reaching their destination, the victim managed to break free and ran straight to the Sixth District Police substation where he reported the assault to police. The Metropolitan Police Department investigated the case, which was prosecuted and tried by Assistant U.S. Attorneys Sara Hanson and Lauren Miller of the Major Crimes Section of the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the District of Columbia.
The guilty verdict brings an end to a harrowing ordeal for the victim and serves as a reminder of the dangers of domestic violence and the importance of seeking help when needed.
