NEW ORLEANS – Terrence Thompson Jr., 24, is heading to federal prison after admitting he swiped hundreds of pieces of mail from the Gretna, Louisiana post office and had a legitimate USPS “arrow” key to do it. Thompson was sentenced March 18, 2026, after pleading guilty to both possessing the key illegally and the theft itself.
Federal prosecutors say Thompson wasn’t just grabbing junk mail. He snagged approximately 232 pieces of actual mail deposited by residents, opening the door for potential identity theft and financial scams. The USPS key, meant for authorized postal employees, allowed him to bypass security on mailboxes.
The case landed in the Middle District of Alabama, though the crime took place in Louisiana. Details on why the case was prosecuted there weren’t immediately available. U.S. Attorney David I. Courcelle announced the sentencing but offered no comment on a possible motive or if Thompson was connected to a larger operation.
The specific length of Thompson’s sentence hasn’t been released, but the federal charges carry significant penalties. It’s a clear message: messing with the mail is a federal offense, and the feds are watching.
