RALEIGH, N.C. – A major Raleigh heroin trafficker named Ahmad Rashad McClain, also known as ‘Wop,’ has been sentenced to 480 months in federal prison after attempting to intimidate witnesses. McClain pled guilty to two counts of drug trafficking on June 8, 2022.
U.S. Attorney Michael Easley warned, ‘Tampering with witnesses and attempted intimidation is a sure-fire way to extend your stay in federal prison.’ He added that the government is enhancing its partnership with local law enforcement to combat drug traffickers like McClain.
Court documents showed McClain was identified as a major heroin distributor by the Raleigh Police Department (RPD) following surveillance and informants. A June 8 traffic stop led to the discovery of drugs, paraphernalia, and cash at his residence. Witnesses revealed he distributed over 24,000 grams of heroin in two years.
The government sought an enhanced sentence after McClain was recorded intimidating witnesses. In five calls, he directed an associate to ensure they did not testify. Despite code usage, the intent was clear: ‘Shut them arcade games off,’ McClain said.
Judge James C. Dever III sentenced McClain following a successful investigation by the Raleigh Police Department and Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI). Assistant U.S. Attorney Casey L. Peaden prosecuted the case as part of an Organized Crime Drug Enforcement Task Forces (OCDETF) investigation.
