Meth & Glock: Gonzalez Faces Federal Drug, Gun Charges

SALT LAKE CITY – A Riverton man is facing serious federal time after a raid turned up a massive stash of methamphetamine and a stolen handgun. Ignacio Gonzalez, 27, a citizen of Mexico whose immigration status had already been revoked, is now accused of running a drug operation and illegally possessing a firearm. The bust underscores the ongoing battle against cartel activity bleeding into Utah communities.

Federal agents, working alongside the Taylorsville Police Department, executed a search warrant on August 5, 2025, at a residence in Riverton. What they found wasn’t a simple amount of drugs; it was 51.7 pounds of pure methamphetamine, neatly packaged into roughly 2.1-pound portions. Alongside the meth, authorities also recovered a stolen Glock 43X, 9mm pistol, and other unspecified illegal drugs. The quantity of methamphetamine seized points to a large-scale distribution network, not personal use.

Gonzalez has been indicted by a federal grand jury on three counts: possession of methamphetamine with intent to distribute, possession of cocaine with intent to distribute, and possession of a firearm in furtherance of a drug trafficking crime. These aren’t minor charges. Conviction on any of these could land Gonzalez behind bars for a significant period. He’s currently being held in federal custody, awaiting trial.

Acting United States Attorney Felice John Viti announced the charges, framing the case as part of Operation Take Back America – a nationwide initiative aimed at dismantling cartels and transnational criminal organizations. The operation, a combined effort leveraging resources from the Organized Crime Drug Enforcement Task Forces (OCDETF) and Project Safe Neighborhoods (PSN), signals a heightened focus on stemming the flow of illegal drugs and firearms across the border and into American cities. This isn’t just about one bust; it’s about disrupting a larger network.

The investigation is a joint effort between the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) and the Taylorsville Police Department, with special assistance provided by Homeland Security Investigations (HSI). Assistant United States Attorney Mark E. Woolf is handling the prosecution. The collaboration between these agencies highlights the complex nature of these cases and the need for coordinated law enforcement efforts.

A jury trial is scheduled for November 3, 2025, at 8:30 a.m. in courtroom 3.4 at the Orrin G. Hatch United States District Courthouse in downtown Salt Lake City. It’s important to remember that an indictment is simply an accusation. Gonzalez is presumed innocent until proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt. But the evidence presented so far paints a grim picture of a dangerous criminal operating in our backyard. Grimy Times will continue to follow this case and bring you updates as they develop.
