New York resident Kevin Delgado, 40, was handed a year and a day in federal prison for threatening Michigan Attorney General Dana Nessel. The sentence was announced by United States Attorney Jerome F. Gorgon Jr., who emphasized the importance of ensuring public officials can serve without fear.
In October 2023, AG Nessel posted on her X account about the tragic murder of a friend, expressing grief and shock. Delgado’s threatening response followed the next day. His actions were deemed to be motivated by the Attorney General’s actual or perceived sexual orientation and religion.
Delgado pleaded guilty in May 2025 to one count of transmitting threats in interstate commerce. U.S. Attorney Gorgon stated, ‘Public figures do not give up these protections when they choose to serve us.’ The FBI Detroit Field Office played a crucial role in the investigation.
Acting Special Agent in Charge Reuben C. Coleman highlighted the message sent by Delgado’s sentencing: public officials cannot be hindered by threats and must operate free from intimidation. The FBI, along with law enforcement partners, will continue to hold accountable those who issue dangerous threats against public servants.
This case was investigated by the FBI, and Assistant U.S. Attorney Frances Lee Carlson is handling the prosecution. The Detroit Public Corruption and Civil Rights Squad and the New York Field Office also contributed significantly to bringing this case to closure.
