WASHINGTON D.C. – Charles General, 29, is headed to federal prison for 24 months after pleading guilty to possessing a stolen, loaded handgun. U.S. District Judge Amit Mehta handed down the sentence today.
Cops spotted General and a group smoking weed in a parking lot on Cedar Street SE back in October 2023. When the plainclothes officers moved in, they smelled the marijuana and told the group to put it out. During a search, officers found a loaded Glock 30S .45 caliber pistol tucked into General’s coat pocket.
The Glock wasn’t just any gun – it had been snatched in a burglary from a licensed firearms dealer in Springfield, Virginia. And General wasn’t supposed to have it at all. He’d previously been convicted in D.C. Superior Court for carrying a pistol without a license, making this a federal offense.
The bust was a joint effort by the Metropolitan Police Department and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF). Assistant U.S. Attorney Emory V. Cole prosecuted the case, framing it as part of the broader ‘Make D.C. Safe and Beautiful’ initiative, a Trump-era push for tougher gun crime penalties.
General will serve three years of supervised release after he gets out.
