A former leader of the Boston Chapter of the Massachusetts Almighty Latin King and Queen Nation (Latin Kings) has been sentenced to seven years in prison for racketeering conspiracy.
BOSTON, MA – Angel Calderon, 29, also known as ‘King Bam,’ was sentenced by U.S. Senior District Court Judge Rya W. Zobel to seven years in prison and three years of supervised release, according to a statement from the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the District of Massachusetts.
Calderon pleaded guilty on August 5, 2021, to conspiracy to conduct enterprise affairs through a pattern of racketeering activity, also known as RICO conspiracy.
During the investigation, Calderon was identified as the Inca, or leader, of the Morton Street Bricks (MSB) Chapter of the Latin Kings. This chapter, which included approximately half-a-dozen members, reported to the Massachusetts State Leadership of the Latin Kings and provided information, structure, funds, and other resources to further the Latin Kings’ goals and directives in the state.
The Latin Kings are a violent criminal enterprise comprised of thousands of members across the United States. The gang uses drug distribution to generate revenue and engages in violence against witnesses and rival gangs to further its influence and to protect its turf.
Calderon conspired with members of the Latin Kings regarding the commission of criminal acts and discussed efforts to murder a rival gang member using poisoned narcotics, also known as a hotshot, in 2019. In June 2019, Calderon assaulted a woman at gunpoint and threatened to kill her and her family based upon the belief that she was providing information to law enforcement.
The U.S. Attorney’s Office for the District of Massachusetts, the Federal Bureau of Investigation, the Massachusetts Department of Correction, and the New Bedford Police Department announced the sentencing.
The case is part of an Organized Crime Drug Enforcement Task Forces (OCDETF) operation, which identifies, disrupts, and dismantles the highest-level criminal organizations that threaten the United States using a prosecutor-led, intelligence-driven, multi-agency approach.
The details contained in the charging documents are allegations. The remaining defendants are presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt in a court of law.
