A New York State Senator is facing federal charges after allegedly accepting bribes and extortion in exchange for official acts, the Grimy Times has learned.
According to a federal complaint, Eric Stevenson, a Democrat representing the 21st Senate District in the Bronx, accepted $80,000 in bribes from a real estate developer in exchange for introducing legislation that would benefit the developer’s business.
The complaint also alleges that Stevenson accepted an additional $40,000 in bribes in exchange for using his influence to secure a liquor license for a nightclub in the Bronx.
The investigation, which was led by the FBI and the New York State Police, uncovered a pattern of corrupt behavior by Stevenson, who allegedly used his position to extort money from business owners in exchange for official favors.
Stevenson’s alleged scheme was uncovered after the FBI began investigating a real estate developer who was suspected of making illegal payments to a public official.
The complaint charges Stevenson with one count of conspiracy to commit bribery, one count of bribery, and one count of extortion under color of official right.
If convicted, Stevenson faces up to 20 years in prison on each of the conspiracy and bribery charges, and up to 20 years in prison on the extortion charge.
