New York – In a stern warning, New York Attorney General Letitia James has sounded the alarm on Social Security scams, joining forces with the SSA to mark National Slam the Scam Day. With seniors being prime targets for these fraudulent tactics, AG James is calling on New Yorkers to stay alert and protect their hard-earned benefits.
“Taking advantage of vulnerable seniors to steal their hard-earned Social Security is downright cruel,” Attorney General James stated. “On National Slam the Scam Day, I urge everyone to stay informed, recognize the warning signs, and take steps to protect themselves.”
The common tactics identified by AG James include scammers posing as SSA officials, promising prizes with upfront fees, pretending to be distressed relatives, and pressuring immediate action. The OAG has provided several tips for detection and protection, including verifying unexpected requests, being cautious with wire transfers and gift cards, and never providing personal information without verification.
The Office of the Attorney General (OAG) is encouraging anyone who suspects a scam to report it immediately through their online complaint system or by calling 800-771-7755. AG James emphasizes that if you receive an unexpected call, email, or message asking for your Social Security or banking information, hang up and report it.
“If you believe you are a victim of a scam,” says the OAG, “file a complaint online with our Bureau of Consumer Frauds.”
This consumer alert is part of a broader effort to combat fraud in New York, ensuring that residents can trust their government services and protect themselves from unscrupulous individuals.
