New York City’s James Bradley, also known as ‘Abdullah,’ and Alabama’s Arwa Muthana have been handed down lengthy prison sentences for their roles in attempting to provide material support to the Islamic State of Iraq and al-Sham (ISIS).

United States Attorney Damian Williams announced that Bradley was sentenced to 11 years, while Muthana received nine years. Both pled guilty to charges brought against them by Manhattan federal court, with sentencing carried out on February 2nd for Bradley and today for Muthana.

In a statement, U.S. Attorney Williams said that Bradley and Muthana’s intentions were clear: they sought to travel to the Middle East to fight for ISIS. He commended the FBI New York Joint Terrorism Task Force for their swift action in preventing further acts of terror on American soil.

The investigation revealed that Bradley, since at least 2019, had expressed violent extremist views and had intended to support ISIS either by joining them overseas or conducting a terrorist attack within the United States. He had even considered targeting military bases such as West Point for an attack.

In June 2020, he discussed attacking a military base with an undercover officer and later mentioned another university in New York State where ROTC cadets trained, suggesting they could be targets as well. In January 2021, Bradley married Muthana, and they began planning to travel together to join ISIS.

In reality, their plans were thwarted by law enforcement officers posing as potential facilitators. Despite the facade of support, both Bradley and Muthana were intercepted before they could carry out their heinous intentions.
