Aguadilla Man Caught in Child Exploitation Sting

Aaron Scott Byrns, 46, of Aguadilla, Puerto Rico, has been slapped with a child exploitation indictment, according to the Department of Justice USAO.

The indictment charges Byrns with production of child pornography, possession of child pornography, and video voyeurism. The alleged crimes took place between December 15, 2023, and April 15, 2024, at a federal school campus in Aguadilla.

According to court documents, Byrns used a cellular phone to produce and attempt to produce images of female minors engaged in sexually explicit conduct, including the lascivious exhibition of their genital areas. The defendant captured and attempted to capture these images without the consent of the minors.

Byrns had his initial court appearance before U.S. Magistrate Judge Giselle López-Soler of the U.S. District Court for the District of Puerto Rico. His detention/bail hearing is scheduled for Thursday, May 30, 2024, at 3:00 p.m.

The alleged crimes carry severe penalties. If convicted of producing child pornography, Byrns faces up to 30 years in prison, followed by a term of supervised release of no less than 5 years up to life. He also faces up to 10 years for possession of child pornography and up to 1 year for video voyeurism.

The FBI, with the collaboration of the Department of Homeland Security Investigations (HSI), is investigating the case. Assistant U.S. Attorney Emelina Agrait Barreto of the Child Exploitation and Immigration Unit is prosecuting the case.

This case was brought as part of Project Safe Childhood, a nationwide initiative to combat the epidemic of child sexual exploitation and abuse launched in May 2006 by the Department of Justice.

An indictment is merely an allegation, and all defendants are presumed innocent until proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt in a court of law.
