Paul J. Freeman, National Defense Breach, Florida 2021

PENSACOLA, FLORIDA – In a stunning revelation of espionage, Paul J. Freeman, 68, of Niceville, has been indicted by a federal grand jury for unauthorized possession and transmission of classified national defense information.

The charges were announced following Freeman’s initial appearance in federal court in Pensacola. According to the indictment, Freeman, between November 2020 and March 2021, transmitted sensitive data about U.S. Air Force aircraft and weaponry to unauthorized individuals on multiple occasions.

A detention hearing is scheduled for July 1, 2024, at 1:00 p.m., at the United States Courthouse in Pensacola before Magistrate Judge Zachary Bolitho.

Freeman, if convicted on all nine counts, could face up to ten years’ imprisonment. The investigation into this case is being conducted by the U.S. Air Force Office of Special Investigations and the Federal Bureau of Investigation.

The prosecution team includes Assistant U.S. Attorney David L. Goldberg, Senior Trial Attorney Heather M. Schmidt, and Trial Attorney Yifei Zheng of the National Security Division’s Counterintelligence and Export Control Section.

It’s important to note that an indictment is merely an accusation, and Freeman is presumed innocent until proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt in a fair trial.
