Identity Thief Targets WVU Medicine Patients
Ajarhi Roberts, also known as Wayne Roberts, and his mother Angela Roberts, have been accused of stealing the identities of patients from WVU Medicine University Healthcare in Martinsburg, West Virginia.
According to a 36-count indictment, Angela Roberts, a 41-year-old resident of Stephenson, Virginia, would access her employer’s patient database to obtain sensitive information, including names, dates of birth, Social Security numbers, addresses, and driver’s license numbers.
She then allegedly shared this information with her son, Ajarhi Roberts, a 24-year-old resident of Stephens City, Virginia, who used the stolen identities to open credit card and other financial accounts.
The crimes are alleged to have occurred from March 1, 2016, to January 31, 2017, in Berkeley County, West Virginia, and elsewhere.
Ajarhi and Angela Roberts are charged with identity theft, aggravated identity theft, producing false identity documents, and bank fraud. If convicted, they could face significant prison time and fines.
Assistant U.S. Attorney Lara Omps-Botteicher is prosecuting the case on behalf of the government, with the Federal Bureau of Investigation conducting the investigation.
An indictment is merely an accusation, and the defendants are presumed innocent until proven guilty.
