Al Plummer, Theft of Government Money, Ohio 2023

A University Heights man has been sentenced to 30 days in prison and ordered to pay $45,121 in restitution for stealing government money.

Al Plummer, 51, co-owner of Gimme Java Coffee in Shaker Heights, was found guilty of continuing to withdraw his grandmother’s Social Security Retirement benefits even after she had passed away in July 2013.

According to court documents, Plummer did not report his grandmother’s death and continued to withdraw the monthly benefit until he was caught in October 2016.

U.S. Attorney’s Office prosecutors said Plummer’s actions were a clear abuse of the trust placed in him by the Social Security Administration.

Plummer’s prison sentence will be followed by six months of home confinement. The case was prosecuted by Special Assistant U.S. Attorney Payum Doroodian following an investigation by Kelly Clark from the Social Security Administration Office of Inspector General.

This case is a reminder that the Social Security Administration has measures in place to prevent and detect such crimes, and those who abuse the system will be held accountable.

The U.S. Attorney’s Office will continue to prioritize cases like this one, where individuals have taken advantage of the trust placed in them by the government.
