Grand Bay, AL – A local man has been sentenced to 188 months in prison for his role in a disturbing child pornography case. Denzil Earl McKathan, 34, received the harsh sentence after pleading guilty to receiving child pornography via his smartphone.
According to court documents, a routine check by McKathan’s supervising probation officer in a previous case revealed Internet activity in 2014. A search of his phone revealed nearly 500 images of child pornography, including some that depicted the abuse of infants and toddlers.
This case is a stark reminder of the prevalence of child pornography and the need for continued vigilance in rooting out those who exploit and abuse our most vulnerable citizens. The Southern District of Alabama is committed to holding perpetrators accountable for their crimes.
McKathan’s previous conviction for possession of child pornography in 2005 was a clear warning sign that he posed a significant risk to children. Unfortunately, he continued to engage in this behavior, and his actions have resulted in a lengthy prison sentence and a lifetime of supervision.
The investigation into McKathan’s activities was led by the United States Probation Office and the office of Homeland Security Investigations. Assistant United States Attorneys Suntrease Williams-Maynard and Sean P. Costello prosecuted the case as part of Project Safe Childhood, a Department of Justice initiative aimed at combating technology-facilitated sexual exploitation crimes against children.
McKathan’s sentence is a testament to the dedication of law enforcement and prosecutors in the Southern District of Alabama. His case serves as a reminder that those who engage in child pornography and abuse will be held accountable for their actions. As a community, we must remain vigilant and report any suspicious activity to the authorities.
