FAIRBANKS, Alaska – In a chilling tale of drug trafficking gone awry, Jacob Peter, 25, from Fairbanks, stands accused in federal court after allegedly distributing fentanyl that led to a fatal overdose. The grim incident unfolded on March 3, 2025, when Peter is said to have peddled the deadly substance. Tragically, the victim succumbed to an apparent overdose just a day later, on March 4th.
Peter faces one count of distribution of fentanyl resulting in death, with the severity of his charges underscored by the prospect of a mandatory minimum sentence of 20 years and the possibility of life imprisonment. His first appearance before U.S. Magistrate Judge Scott A. Oravec was marked by the gravity of the charges against him.
“The Justice Department is committed to holding those responsible for drug trafficking accountable, especially when their actions lead to senseless deaths,” commented U.S. Attorney Michael J. Heyman for the District of Alaska. The DEA Seattle Division Office, led by Special Agent in Charge David Reames, has been instrumental in the investigation alongside the Anchorage District Office and the Alaska State Troopers, all part of the Fairbanks Area Narcotics Team (FANT) High Intensity Drug Trafficking Area (HIDTA) Task Force.
Assistant U.S. Attorney Carly Vosacek will be leading the prosecution against Peter. The case is an integral part of Operation Take Back America, a nationwide initiative aimed at combating illegal immigration, eliminating cartels and transnational criminal organizations, and safeguarding communities from violent crime and drug trafficking. This operation coordinates resources from various Task Forces, including OCDETFs and PSN.
Despite the serious charges, Peter is presumed innocent until proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt in court. The grim narrative of his alleged actions serves as a stark reminder of the dangerous consequences of fentanyl distribution and the relentless efforts by law enforcement to combat this crisis.”
