Convenience Store Clerk Robbed at Gunpoint in Clearwater
A terrifying scene unfolded at a Clearwater convenience store on November 8, 2023, when two men brandished a firearm and struck a store clerk in the back of the head, authorities said.
According to court documents, Alex Jones (31, Pinellas County) and Jhakheem Smith (24, Pinellas County) entered the store, brandished a firearm, and struck the clerk. They then forced the clerk at gunpoint to the back of the store before fleeing the scene.
The victim suffered a violent blow to the back of the head, leaving the community shaken. This brazen act of violence has raised concerns about public safety in Clearwater.
Prosecutors have charged Jones and Smith with Hobbs Act robbery, conspiracy to commit that robbery, and one count of brandishing a firearm during a crime of violence. If convicted of the robbery offenses, each faces a maximum penalty of 20 years in federal prison for each charge. If convicted of the firearm offense, each faces a maximum penalty of life in federal prison.
The case was investigated by the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives, the Clearwater Police Department, and the Largo Police Department. Assistant United States Attorney Samantha Newman is prosecuting the case.
This case is part of Project Safe Neighborhoods (PSN), a program aimed at reducing violent crime and gun violence in communities. The program brings together law enforcement and community organizations to prevent violence and make neighborhoods safer.
