Amy Young, 42, Sentenced to 23 Months for Wire Fraud Scam
A Mt. Vernon, Mo., woman has been sentenced to 23 months in prison for her role in a wire fraud conspiracy and wire fraud scheme that targeted the Missouri Lottery Commission and an area gas station.
The scheme, which took place in July and August of 2022, involved the use of stolen and fraudulent credit cards and credit card numbers to purchase Missouri lottery tickets at a Joplin, Mo., gas station.
Amy Young, 42, conspired with others to employ the scheme, which made $62,082.50 in fraudulent transactions at the gas station. The group also fraudulently claimed $54,248 in cash prizes from the Missouri Lottery Commission.
The total amount of the fraudulent transactions and claimed cash prizes was $116,330.50.
Young’s sentence was handed down by U.S. District Judge Douglas Harpool, who based his decision on her prior guilty plea to conspiracy to commit wire fraud and wire fraud.
The case was prosecuted by Assistant U.S. Attorney Patrick Carney and investigated by the Federal Bureau of Investigation and the Joplin, Missouri, Police Department.
Amy Young’s conviction and sentencing serve as a reminder of the importance of protecting against financial scams and the consequences of committing such crimes.
