OMAHA, NEBRASKA – In a brazen display of violence, Anthony Aranda and Jamie Speelman terrorized the community with their armed robberies.
On November 22, 2013, at approximately 3:30 a.m., the duo stole a GMC Sierra pickup at gunpoint near 17th and N Streets. The victim, a woman who was outside brushing snow off her car as she prepared to go to work, was left shaken by the encounter.
Just hours later, at about 10:25 pm, Aranda and Speelman robbed the Midtown Gas and Grocery located at 1222 S. 24th Street. They entered the store, each armed with a gun, and demanded money from the employees. The duo made off with approximately $435.00 in cash.
Aranda, 32, pled guilty to carjacking and brandishing a firearm. He received a sentence of 3 years and 10 months on the carjacking charge, as well as an additional 7 years for brandishing a firearm.
Speelman, 29, also pled guilty to the Midtown robbery. She received a sentence of 5 years and 3 months for the robbery, as well as an additional 7 years for brandishing a firearm. By statute, the sentences on the firearms charges must be served after they have completed their time on the carjacking and robbery charges.
The case was investigated by the Omaha Police Department and the Federal Bureau of Investigation.
U.S. Attorney Deborah R. Gilg announced the sentencing, stating that the community is safer with Aranda and Speelman behind bars. The duo’s actions were a threat to public safety, and their sentences reflect the severity of their crimes.
The sentencing of Aranda and Speelman serves as a reminder that armed robbery will not be tolerated in our community. The Omaha Police Department and the FBI worked tirelessly to bring these individuals to justice, and we are grateful for their efforts.
