Marcus Remus, Armed Bank Robbery, Nebraska 2016

Omaha’s Marcus Remus, 21, is headed to federal prison for 90 months after being convicted in a violent string of six armed robberies that terrorized Lincoln, Nebraska in late 2016. The sentence, handed down by Chief U.S. District Judge John M. Gerrard, marks the end of a brutal crime spree that included a bank heist, convenience store stickups, and a shooting.

Remus pleaded guilty to one count of interference with commerce by robbery and one count of discharging a firearm in furtherance of a crime of violence—charges stemming from a coordinated run with co-defendant Shawn Brooks between November 29 and December 30, 2016. Federal prosecutors detailed how the duo hit one bank and five convenience stores, with Remus actively participating in each. In three of the robberies, a firearm was brandished; at the bank, shots were fired directly at employees.

The final robbery, on December 30, 2016, turned deadly. At a Lincoln convenience store, Remus shot a gas station clerk—capping a month-long crime wave that left workers shaken and communities on edge. The victim survived, but the bullet left a permanent scar on the neighborhood and the court’s conscience.

While Remus drew 90 months behind bars, his accomplice Shawn Brooks got no sympathy from the court. Convicted in a separate trial, Brooks was sentenced to 40 years in federal prison on April 12, 2019. Evidence during his trial laid bare the pair’s coordinated tactics, with Brooks often the face of the threats—and Remus, far from a bystander, pulling the trigger when it mattered most.

Under the sentence, Remus will face an additional five years of supervised release upon his release from prison. He’s also been ordered to pay $2,271 in restitution to the six victims, a small sum compared to the psychological toll of being held at gunpoint during a routine shift. The judgment reflects federal sentencing guidelines for violent offenses that disrupt interstate commerce.

The case was jointly investigated by the Lincoln Police Department and the FBI, agencies that spent months piecing together surveillance footage, ballistic reports, and eyewitness accounts. U.S. Attorney Joe Kelly praised the collaboration, calling the convictions a win for public safety in Nebraska. ‘Armed robbery is not a victimless crime,’ Kelly said. ‘These sentences send a message: terrorize a community, and the federal system will answer.’
