Troy D. Murphy, 34, Escapes Federal Custody in Omaha
An Omaha man has been sentenced to prison time for escaping federal custody, a crime that led to a massive manhunt in the city. Troy D. Murphy, 34, was sentenced to 15 months in prison for his role in the escape.
According to sources, Murphy was a resident at Dismas Charities, a non-secure facility in Omaha, as part of his sentence for previous convictions. However, on October 11, 2024, employees at the facility discovered that Murphy had escaped by leaving without authorization.
Security camera footage revealed that Murphy left the facility at 10:02 p.m. on October 11, 2024. His whereabouts remained unknown for nearly three weeks, until October 30, 2024, when the United States Marshals Service Fugitive Task Force arrested him at his mother’s residence in Omaha. He surrendered without incident.
Murphy’s escape from federal custody is a serious offense, and he will serve a 15-month prison sentence as a result. He will also begin a 3-year term of supervised release after his release from prison. There is no parole in the federal system.
This case serves as a reminder of the consequences of escaping federal custody. The United States Marshals Service worked tirelessly to track down Murphy and bring him to justice. The agency’s Fugitive Task Force is dedicated to locating and apprehending fugitives who have escaped from federal custody.
Murphy’s previous convictions were for transferring a firearm to a prohibited person and being a prohibited person in possession of a firearm. He was sentenced to 77 months’ incarceration in 2021 for these crimes.
