Seattle — A 73-year-old man from Tucson, Arizona, has been sentenced to four years in federal prison for attempting to meet a fictitious minor for sex purposes in Washington state, according to Acting U.S. Attorney Teal Luthy Miller.
Steven J. Migdon was apprehended in August following an investigation led by the Seattle Police Department and the FBI, who posed as a 13-year-old boy online. Migdon engaged in sexually explicit conversations, sending his own explicit images to the fictitious teen.
In July, Migdon flew from Tucson to Everett with the intent of meeting this “teen” at a hotel room, only to be arrested upon arrival. An examination of his phone revealed additional evidence of child sexual exploitation and abuse images, prompting charges for his actions.
During sentencing, Judge Jamal N. Whitehead highlighted Migdon’s otherwise crime-free life but emphasized the gravity of his offenses: “Today we are here to confront the ugliness of what you did over ten days.” Assistant United States Attorney Cecelia Gregson argued for a four-year sentence and ten years of supervised release, stating that Migdon had engaged in ongoing sexual communication with minors prior to his trip.
Migdon was ordered to pay $3,000 in restitution to the victims of child sex abuse and is now required to register as a sex offender. The case is part of Project Safe Childhood, an initiative by the Department of Justice aimed at combating child sexual exploitation and abuse online.
