Atlantic City Kidnapping Duo Sentenced to Prison
Two men involved in the kidnapping and murder of a 20-year-old Atlantic City woman have been sentenced to prison in the case.
Aziz Sanders, 21, was sentenced to 30 years in prison and DeShawn Hicks, 22, was sentenced to 20 years in prison. They previously pleaded guilty to their roles in the kidnapping and death of Nadirah Ruffin, whose body was found in Philadelphia in April 2011.
According to court documents, Sanders and Hicks were involved in a Hobbs Act robbery and kidnapping that resulted in Nadirah Ruffin’s death. They were aided by Shamerria Smith, 27, who was previously sentenced to 35 years in prison for her role in the crime.
During the robbery, Nadirah Ruffin was duct-taped and taken from her home, along with four other victims. She was then taken to the banks of the Schuylkill River, where Sanders shot her in the head, killing her.
In addition to their prison terms, Judge Rodriguez sentenced Hicks and Sanders to five years each of supervised release and ordered them each to pay $1.5 million in restitution.
The case was investigated by the FBI and prosecuted by the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the District of New Jersey.
Hicks and Sanders’ sentences bring closure to a case that shocked the community in 2011. The sentences also serve as a reminder of the severity of the consequences for those involved in violent crimes.
