Armed Robbery Rocks Topeka
TOPEKA, KAN.
A brazen armed robbery at a Topeka convenience store left a man shaken and a community on high alert. On September 16, 2014, a masked gunman brandishing a firearm entered the Low Cost Plus store at 3101 S.E. 6th in Topeka just as the victim was beginning to fill an ATM. The gunman, later identified as Pattrick J. Towner, assaulted the victim and took the money. He also took the keys to the victim’s van and escaped in the vehicle.
As it turns out, the gunman was not acting alone. Ahmad Salim Salti, a former clerk at the Low Cost Plus store, had helped to plan the robbery. Salti gave Towner the date and time the victim would come to fill the ATM, providing him with the perfect opportunity to strike.
Salti, 21, pleaded guilty to one count of conspiracy to commit robbery. He was subsequently sentenced to 24 months in federal prison for his role in the crime.
Co-defendant Pattrick J. Towner has also pleaded guilty and is awaiting sentencing.
U.S. Attorney Barry Grissom commended the Topeka Police Department, the FBI, and Assistant U.S. Attorney Jared Maag for their work on the case.
The case serves as a stark reminder of the dangers of armed robbery and the importance of community cooperation in bringing perpetrators to justice.
