As the nation prepares for tomorrow’s general election, the Justice Department is gearing up to take on election day crimes head-on. The DOJ has announced plans to monitor polling places and receive complaints of potential voting rights violations.
The Civil Rights Division’s Voting Section has been working tirelessly to ensure that all qualified voters have the opportunity to cast their ballots and have their votes counted free of discrimination, intimidation, or fraud. The division will conduct monitoring in the field at polling places, and attorneys in the Voting and Criminal Sections will be ready to receive election-related complaints.
Citizens can report complaints related to voting rights by calling 1-800-253-3931 toll-free, or by TTY at 202-305-0082. Complaints can also be reported by fax to 202-307-3961, by email to voting.section@usdoj.gov, or through a link on the DOJ’s website.
However, citizens who witness violence, threats of violence, or intimidation at a polling place should report it immediately to local police authorities by calling 911. They should also report it to the DOJ after local authorities are contacted.
The Criminal Division and the DOJ’s 94 U.S. Attorneys’ Offices will also be working to enforce federal laws that criminalize certain forms of election fraud. The public can help by being vigilant and reporting any suspicious activity to the authorities.
As the stakes are high, the DOJ is urging citizens to exercise their right to vote without interference. The agency is committed to ensuring that all eligible voters can cast their ballots and have their votes counted without fear of intimidation or tampering.
With the help of the public, the DOJ aims to prevent election day crimes and protect the integrity of the democratic process.
