Thomasina E Amponsah, Identity Theft, Maryland 2024

Baltimore, Maryland – Thomasina E. Amponsah, 50, of Baltimore County, has stunned the healthcare community by admitting to a elaborate scheme of impersonating nurses, leading to her guilty plea on charges of false statements in connection with health care matters and aggravated identity theft.

Amponsah, who never possessed her own nursing license or credentials, used stolen nursing licenses to gain employment as both a registered nurse (RN) and licensed practical nurse (LPN) at no less than 40 facilities across Maryland. Her actions bilked healthcare benefit programs like Medicare and Medicaid, earning her at least $100,000 in fraudulent wages.

The U.S. Attorney for the District of Maryland, Kelly O. Hayes, announced Amponsah’s guilty plea alongside Special Agent in Charge Maureen Dixon of the Department of Health and Human Services Office of Inspector General (HHS-OIG). According to the plea agreement, Amponsah’s deception began in September 2019 and continued until August 2023.

One such instance involved Amponsah submitting a fraudulent job application to Nursing Facility 1 under the identity of Identity Victim T.R.S. She was terminated after attempting to forge a controlled medication prescription form for the opioid painkiller Tramadol. In another case, she used stolen credentials to obtain employment with Staffing Agency 1, leading her to work at 21 different skilled nursing facilities over a period of 15 months.

Amponsah faces a maximum sentence of five years in federal prison for false statements related to health care matters and a mandatory two-year sentence for aggravated identity theft. Her actions have been deemed a serious breach of trust within the healthcare industry, with potential consequences for patient safety and public confidence.
