Baltimore County, Maryland – The grimy halls of justice were witness to a shocking plea yesterday as Thomasina E. Amponsah, 50, stood accused, admitting to the systematic impersonation of nurses and pleaded guilty to aggravated identity theft.
Amponsah, who brazenly used stolen nursing licenses to secure employment under false pretenses, has been exposed for her deceitful campaign of deception that spanned over three years. The scam, which preyed on the vulnerable, bilked Medicare and Medicaid programs out of tens of thousands of dollars.
According to federal prosecutors, Amponsah’s fraudulent activities began in September 2019 and continued until August 2023. During this time, she posed as a registered nurse (RN) and licensed practical nurse (LPN) at no less than 40 Maryland facilities, including skilled nursing homes and even a public school.
Her deception was not limited to job applications. Amponsah admitted to forging medical prescriptions and falsifying patient records, leaving the health and safety of patients in serious jeopardy. Her fraudulent enterprise earned her at least $100,000 before her deceit was uncovered.
The defendant’s fall from grace began when she submitted a fraudulent job application to Nursing Facility 1, using another nurse’s license number and picture. She was terminated after admitting to forging a prescription for the opioid painkiller Tramadol. But this was just the beginning of a larger scheme involving stolen identities and fictitious resumes.
Amponsah faces a federal prison sentence of up to five years for her false statements related to health care matters, along with a mandatory two-year sentence for aggravated identity theft. The justice system has spoken, but Thomasina E. Amponsah’s deception leaves a lasting scar on the healthcare industry and the trust it relies upon.
