Jeffrey S. Bonneau, 38, of Bancroft, Nebraska, crashed into the end of his crime spree on April 20, 2017, after a brazen daylight bank robbery that saw him roar up to the First Bank of Bancroft on a stolen ATV, demand cash, and flee — only to ignite a manhunt that ended with a gunshot, a crash, and a hospital visit laced with methamphetamine.
At approximately 5:35 p.m., Bonneau, wearing a dark motorcycle helmet, camouflage clothing, and gloves, parked the stolen ATV on the sidewalk outside the bank and walked in. He demanded money from the teller, who handed over $6,745.00. He then bolted, throttled the ATV, and disappeared into the rural backroads, leaving behind a stunned community and a trail of forensic breadcrumbs.
Officers tracked Bonneau to a grove near 2345 R Road, where he refused to surrender. At one point, he claimed to be armed and fired a single shot into the air. He bolted again on the ATV, crashing shortly after. Arrested at the scene, he was transported to Pender Hospital, where toxicology reports confirmed methamphetamine in his system. All stolen cash was recovered.
Bonneau later pleaded guilty to one count of bank robbery, admitting he used no firearm during the actual robbery — the gun surfaced only during the manhunt. Despite the lack of evidence linking a weapon to the bank heist, he also pled guilty to possession of a firearm by a user of a controlled substance, a federal charge carrying serious weight.
Today, U.S. Attorney Joseph P. Kelly confirmed that Bonneau was sentenced by the Honorable Laurie Smith Camp to 30 months in federal prison, followed by 3 years of supervised release and 150 hours of community service. The sentence for the firearms charge runs concurrently with the robbery term, a decision that reflects the intertwined nature of the crimes but also the absence of gun use during the robbery itself.
The investigation was a full-force collaboration between the Federal Bureau of Investigation, Bancroft Police Department, Cuming County Sheriff’s Department, and Nebraska State Patrol — a reminder that even in small-town Nebraska, federal firepower comes fast when banks are hit and guns are fired.
