Kartarius Dewan Johnson, 45, and Danisha Anita Foster, 39, of Mobile, Alabama, were convicted of a conspiracy to commit bank fraud involving over $25 million in fraudulent checks. The scheme targeted the U.S. District Court and a luxury vehicle dealership, with the goal of securing Johnson’s release from federal custody. Johnson, a federal inmate at the Escambia County Detention Center, and Foster coordinated the scheme, which included drafting fictitious documents and mailing them to the federal courthouse and a luxury vehicle dealership in Houston, Texas.
The fraudulent checks, totaling $25 million, were accompanied by documents purporting to obligate the Court to release Johnson from federal custody. Johnson also sent a similar fictitious check for $825,000 to the luxury vehicle dealership in an attempt to fraudulently purchase two Rolls-Royce vehicles. Federal agents discovered the scheme and seized contraband cell phones from both Johnson and Foster, which contained evidence of the fraud.
In July 2023, Johnson was sentenced to 231 months in federal prison for various fraud schemes, aggravated identity theft, and false statements to a federal agency. The conviction is a result of a two-day trial, where the jury reviewed emails, Snapchat messages, recorded jail calls, and other evidence.
The investigation was conducted by federal agents, who worked to uncover the scheme and bring Johnson and Foster to justice. The conviction serves as a warning to those who would attempt to commit similar crimes, and demonstrates the commitment of law enforcement to protecting the public and upholding the law.
