Bank Larceny Duo Caught in Pierre, SD

PIERRE, SD – In a brazen daylight heist, two individuals from Mexico swiped nearly $2,070 from a BankWest branch office in Pierre, SD. Ismael Espinoza-Ortiz, aka Misael Sereseres Ortega, 37, and Alejandra Corral Madrid, 26, both of Mexico, were arrested on November 5, 2012, and have since pleaded guilty to Bank Larceny.
According to court documents, the duo entered the BankWest office and handed a bank teller $1,535 in small bills. While the teller was distracted, Sereseres Ortega reached under the glass and stole property and money belonging to BankWest in the amount of $2,070. The pair then fled the scene, but were apprehended later that day in Campbell County, SD.
In addition to the Bank Larceny charge, Sereseres Ortega also pleaded guilty to Illegal Reentry after Deportation. This charge stems from previous deportation orders, including one on June 18, 1995, and another on February 17, 2010.
The investigation was conducted by the Federal Bureau of Investigation and the Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE). Assistant U.S. Attorney Meghan N. Dilges is prosecuting the cases.
The defendants were remanded to the custody of the U.S. Marshal pending sentencing, which has been set for May 29, 2013.
Both Sereseres Ortega and Corral Madrid face a maximum penalty of 10 years of imprisonment, a $250,000 fine, or both; 3 years of supervised release; an additional 2 years of supervised release upon revocation; and $100 to the Victim Assistance Fund.
Restitution may be imposed in the case.
