Former Correctional Officer Sentenced for Sexually Abusing Inmate and Accepting Bribes
Youngstown, Ohio – Barbara Davis, a 47-year-old former correctional officer at the Northeast Ohio Correctional Center (NEOCC), has been sentenced to five months imprisonment and five months of home confinement for sexually abusing an inmate and accepting bribes to smuggle contraband into the facility.
According to court documents, from November 13, 2017, to November 7, 2018, Davis engaged in sexual conduct with an inmate at the NEOCC and smuggled a cell phone and tobacco to the inmate in exchange for payments made through a mobile payment application.
“Exploiting a position of trust by sexually abusing an inmate and receiving bribe payoffs for smuggling contraband into a correction center threatens to undermine the public’s trust in our criminal justice system,” said Acting U.S. Attorney Bridget M. Brennan. “Let this matter be a reminder to the public that anyone who seeks to harm and exploit inmates or detainees can and will be held accountable.”
“This sentence demonstrates those that are criminally responsible are held accountable,” said FBI Special Agent in Charge Eric B. Smith. “Ms. Davis, a former corrections officer, will now be on the other side of the incarceration bars for her deviant unlawful behavior.”
“Davis sexually abused an inmate and accepted bribes for smuggling contraband into a federal prison. Today’s sentencing shows that when correctional officers abuse their authority, the Office of the Inspector General will ensure they are held accountable,” said William J. Hannah, Special Agent in Charge of the Office of the Inspector General Chicago Field Office.
The investigation was conducted by the Cleveland Federal Bureau of Investigation and the Office of the Inspector General. The case was prosecuted by Assistant U.S. Attorney Justin Seabury Gould.
Barbara Davis, 47, of Youngstown, Ohio, was sentenced to five months imprisonment and five months of home confinement by U.S. Judge Sara Lioi on January 2021. Davis pleaded guilty in January of 2021 to sexual abuse of a ward, accepting bribes and providing a cell phone and tobacco to an inmate.
