Beatriz Toledo, Tax Fraud, Florida 2024

MIAMI – In a brazen scheme to cheat the system, Beatriz Toledo, 61, owner of Immigration and Tax Service Group LLC, willfully prepared false and fraudulent tax returns for clients, resulting in a staggering $20 million loss in federal taxes.

According to court documents, Toledo, through her company, prepared false tax returns for tax years 2017 through 2021, including false claims for the Residential Energy Credit and false itemized deductions for state and local sales taxes.

Despite a permanent injunction entered against her in 2010, Toledo continued to engage in this criminal conduct, submitting approximately 7,800 tax returns with fraudulent claims for residential energy tax credits.

The scheme allowed Toledo’s clients to claim bigger tax refunds, but ultimately resulted in the underpayment of about $20 million in federal taxes. Toledo’s company received approximately $7.1 million in tax preparation fees, which were taken directly out of clients’ refund checks.

Toledo was sentenced to almost five years in federal prison and one year of supervised release post-prison, as well as ordered to pay over $20 million in restitution to the IRS.

U.S. Attorney Hayden P. O’Bryne for the Southern District of Florida and Special Agent in Charge Emmanuel Gomez of the IRS Criminal Investigation (IRS-CI), Miami Field Office, made the announcement.

IRS-CI, Miami Field Office, investigated the case, while Assistant U.S. Attorney Will J. Rosenzweig is prosecuting it.

Toledo’s egregious actions demonstrate the importance of ensuring the integrity of our tax system and the consequences of violating the law.
