Benjamin Paul Egli, Child Exploitation, Iowa 2023

In a shocking case of child exploitation, Benjamin Paul Egli, a 30-year-old from North Liberty, Iowa, has pleaded guilty to conspiracy to sexually exploit a child and possession of child pornography. Egli’s crimes involve the use of Snapchat to make video calls to another individual, where the person engaged in sexually explicit conduct with a toddler at Egli’s request. The defendant then screen-recorded the sexual conduct and saved the videos on his phone.

The investigation revealed that Egli also possessed other images and videos of child sexual abuse material on his phone, including images of children performing sexual acts on animals and sadistic and masochistic conduct. This disturbing content was discovered as part of a nationwide initiative to combat child sexual exploitation and abuse, known as Project Safe Childhood.

Project Safe Childhood is a collaborative effort between the United States Attorneys’ Offices and the Criminal Division’s Child Exploitation and Obscenity Section to locate, apprehend, and prosecute individuals who sexually exploit children. The initiative has been in place since May 2006 and has led to the rescue of numerous victims.

Egli faces a mandatory minimum sentence of 15 years’ imprisonment and a possible maximum sentence of 50 years’ imprisonment, a $500,000 fine, $77,200 in special assessments, and a life term of supervised release following any imprisonment. Sentencing before United States District Court Chief Judge C.J. Williams will be set after a presentence report is prepared.

Egli remains in custody of the United States Marshal pending sentencing. The case was investigated by the Federal Bureau of Investigation, the Iowa Division of Criminal Investigation, the Tipton Police Department, and the Joint Forensic Analysis Cyber Team. Assistant United States Attorney Devra T. Hake is leading the prosecution.
