Berwick Man Charged with Firearms Violations

HARRISBURG – A Berwick man has been indicted on firearms charges after allegedly possessing 25 firearms, including handguns, rifles, and shotguns.

Colton Oppel, 30, of Berwick, Pennsylvania, was indicted by a federal grand jury on September 14, 2021, on firearms charges. The indictment alleges that in January 2020, Oppel, who is prohibited from possessing firearms based on prior convictions, possessed the 25 firearms.

According to Acting United States Attorney Bruce D. Brandler, the indictment also alleges that Oppel possessed a firearm with an obliterated serial number and a sawed-off shotgun.

The case was investigated by the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF), the Briar Creek Police Department, and the Pennsylvania Attorney General’s Office Bureau of Narcotics Investigation. Assistant U.S. Attorney Geoffrey W. MacArthur is prosecuting the case.

This case is being prosecuted as part of the joint federal, state, and local Project Safe Neighborhoods (PSN) Program, which focuses enforcement efforts on the most violent offenders and partners with locally based prevention and reentry programs.

Indictments are only allegations, and Oppel is presumed to be innocent unless and until found guilty in court. If convicted, Oppel faces a maximum penalty of 10 years of imprisonment, a term of supervised release following imprisonment, and a fine.
