KANSAS CITY, Mo. — In a stunning admission of guilt, Bianca Cobbins, 42, a Kansas City tax preparer, pleaded guilty in federal court for her role in two fraudulent schemes that collectively cost victims over $348,000.
Cobbins admitted to using the personal information of a victim to obtain a fake driver’s license and open a fraudulent checking account. She then forged paystubs to secure a consumer loan, aiming for a loss of at least $36,128.32. Cobbins was also charged with preparing false tax returns for multiple years, inflating refunds through fraudulent Schedule C forms, resulting in a total estimated loss of $312,656.
As a professional tax preparer, Cobbins’s actions were especially egregious, exploiting her position of trust to defraud her clients. The scheme spanned five tax years and involved at least 55 false returns. Cobbins faces up to 30 years in federal prison for the financial institution charges and up to three years per fraudulent tax return.
The sentencing hearing will follow a presentence investigation by the United States Probation Office. Assistant U.S. Attorney Nicholas P. Heberle is leading the prosecution, with investigations conducted by the United States Secret Service, IRS-CI, and Lee’s Summit Police Department.
Quanisha Capelton, who was charged and convicted for her part in the fraudulent driver’s license scheme, has already been sentenced to the Bureau of Prisons. This case serves as a stark reminder of the dangers posed by unscrupulous individuals within trusted professions.
