A Honduran national, Orlin Rafael Cerrato-Avilez, walked free into a nightmare when he was arrested by Independence cops for lying about his birthdate during a traffic stop. Turns out, 32-year-old Cerrato-Avilez had no business being back in the States.
ICE-ERO took custody of Cerrato-Avilez after his fingerprints were run, revealing a prior deportation in April 2013. ICE-HSI and the Independence PD uncovered the truth behind his return.
A jury in the US District Court in Kansas City found Cerrato-Avilez guilty of one count of illegal reentry of a removed alien on April 22, 2026.
Now, Cerrato-Avilez is staring down the barrel of up to two years in federal prison. The sentencing date will be determined by the court.
Cerrato-Avilez was prosecuted by Special Assistant US Attorney Michael J. Nichols and Assistant US Attorney Kathleen D. Mahoney.
