⏱ 2 min read

Over 200 individuals were charged in Texas with immigration and border security-related crimes from May 8-14, as part of an ongoing effort to crack down on illegal activity along the southern border. The charges include illegal entry, felony reentry, human smuggling, and other immigration crimes, with many of the defendants having prior convictions for violent crimes, narcotics, and more. The cases were filed in the Southern District of Texas, with the majority of the defendants being charged with felony reentry after prior removal.

Two Mexican nationals, German Omar Elbir-Palma and Alejandro Perez-Miramontes, were charged with illegal reentry into the country, with both having prior felony convictions for the same crime. Elbir-Palma was also convicted of domestic assault, while Perez-Miramontes has multiple prior convictions for burglary. If convicted, they each face up to 20 years in federal prison.

In addition to the new charges, two illegal alien felons, Jose Alcantar Esquivel Moreno and Esequiel Rueda-Ramirez, were sentenced for unlawfully reentering the country. Moreno received 54 months, while Rueda-Ramirez received 48 months. Both have been removed from the country multiple times and have prior convictions for various crimes, including aggravated assault and drug possession.

A third defendant, Luis Miguel Sanchez-Martinez, was sentenced to 42 months in Houston, with the court noting his dangerous behavior. The sentences and new charges are part of a larger effort by the Department of Justice to enforce border security and prosecute those who commit immigration-related crimes.
