Two Boston men, Mario Castro and Jorge Grandon, have faced federal sentencing for their roles in a massive methamphetamine trafficking ring that spanned across state lines.
Mario Castro, 50, received a 57-month sentence after being convicted of distributing methamphetamine in the Boston area. His co-conspirator, Jorge Grandon, 49, was sentenced to 30 months for his part in the conspiracy on May 1, 2019.
This sentencing follows the guilty pleas of all 11 defendants who were indicted in 2016 on charges including conspiracy to distribute methamphetamine, possession with intent to distribute, and money laundering. Christopher Halfond, another defendant, was previously sentenced to 140 months in federal prison.
The investigation that led to these convictions began in 2013 when the ring transported large quantities of meth from San Diego, California, to Boston for distribution. Proceeds were then moved back to California and laundered through various means.
Approximately 75 grams of 99% pure meth were seized from Grandon and hidden in Castro’s pants during a December 2015 sting. The case was a collaborative effort involving multiple federal agencies, state police, and local law enforcement.
The sentencing of Castro and Grandon is part of the ongoing efforts to combat drug trafficking and financial crimes across the country. Assistant U.S. Attorneys James E. Arnold and Jared C. Dolan are leading the prosecution in this case.
