Brad Lee Schuhmann, Civil Rights Violation, Kentucky 2024

LOUISVILLE, KY — In a shocking turn of events, former Louisville Metro Police Department (LMPD) officer Brad Lee Schuhmann was sentenced to two years’ probation, six months home detention, sex offender registration, and a $2000 fine for violating the civil rights of a minor.

Schuhmann, 32, was found guilty of deprivation of rights under the color of law, a federal offense. The crime was committed during his time as an advisor in the LMPD Explorer Program, where he met Jane Doe, a minor participating in the program, and subjected her to sexual contact.

The abuse occurred from 2009 to 2010, when Schuhmann was in a position of authority and special trust due to his role as an advisor. He was hired as a police officer in 2010 and remained involved in the Explorer Program during his training period.

According to the Plea Agreement, Schuhmann will register as a sex offender as part of his sentence. The agreement also notes that he participated in the Explorer Program from May 2002 until April 2009 and later applied for an LMPD sworn officer position.

Assistant United States Attorney Jo E. Lawless prosecuted the case, which was investigated by the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) and the LMPD’s Public Integrity Unit as part of the Louisville Public Corruption and Civil Rights Task Force.

This case was brought as part of Project Safe Childhood, a nationwide initiative launched in May 2006 to combat child sexual exploitation and abuse. The initiative marshals federal, state, and local resources to locate, apprehend, and prosecute individuals who sexually exploit children.

Schuhmann’s sentencing concludes the third federal prosecution in connection with the LMPD Explorer Program. Acting U.S. Attorney Michael A. Bennett commended AUSA Lawless and the men and women of the Louisville FBI and LMPD who conducted the investigations into criminal conduct associated with the program.
