Brandon Mitchell, a 28-year-old from Mason City, Iowa, has pleaded guilty to being a prohibited person in possession of a firearm. This conviction stems from his previous domestic abuse assault cases in the Iowa District Court for Cerro Gordo County.
Mitchell’s guilty plea, which occurred on April 30, 2025, marks a significant development in a case that has been ongoing since February 24, 2024. During that time, Mitchell received a 9mm pistol while under indictment for attempted murder, intimidation with a dangerous weapon, and possession of a firearm by a domestic abuser.
As part of his plea, Mitchell admitted to having two prior convictions for misdemeanor domestic violence and being an unlawful user of marijuana. Furthermore, evidence showed that he had discarded the 9mm pistol out of a bedroom window during a search warrant at his residence, in an attempt to avoid being found in possession of a firearm.
The case is part of Project Safe Neighborhoods (PSN), a program aimed at reducing violent crime and gun violence in communities. This initiative brings together law enforcement and local communities to foster trust, support community-based organizations, set focused enforcement priorities, and measure results.
Mitchell faces a possible maximum sentence of 15 years’ imprisonment, a $250,000 fine, and not more than three years of supervised release following any imprisonment. His sentencing will be set after a presentence report is prepared.
The case was investigated by the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives, Iowa Division of Narcotic Enforcement, and Mason City Police Department, and is being prosecuted by Assistant United States Attorney Kraig R. Hamit. Mitchell remains in the custody of the United States Marshal pending sentencing.
