HONOLULU, HI – A former Maui Police Department officer has fallen from grace, admitting to a horrific attempt to exploit a child online. Brandon Charles Saffeels, 37, pleaded guilty today in U.S. District Court to attempted child enticement, a charge carrying a potential life sentence. The betrayal is especially stinging given Saffeels was already facing time for a separate federal conviction.
The case unfolded after Saffeels initiated contact December 3, 2021, with an online profile posing as a young female. Unbeknownst to Saffeels, the profile was operated by an undercover law enforcement officer. Court documents reveal a disturbing escalation of inappropriate communication. When asked his opinion of the UC’s stated age of 13, Saffeels chillingly replied, “Age is just a number.”
Saffeels didn’t stop at suggestive language. He repeatedly offered the undercover officer money, and when pressed about what would be expected in return, bluntly stated, “Sex.” He then demanded explicit images, specifically requesting “a sexy nude” picture. Simultaneously, Saffeels sent the UC a photograph of himself displaying a portion of his genitals, further illustrating the depravity of his actions.
The digital predation culminated in a planned meeting. On December 4, 2021, Saffeels arranged to meet the UC for sex at a designated location. He arrived shortly after midnight on December 5th and was immediately arrested by waiting law enforcement. The timing is particularly damning: Saffeels was already scheduled to begin serving a 30-month sentence on January 7, 2022, for a separate federal public corruption offense.
U.S. Attorney Clare E. Connors minced no words, stating, “This defendant violated the trust of the court…Because the defendant’s new crime sought to victimize a child, it requires a minimum term of 10 years.” Saffeels now faces a mandatory minimum of 10 years in prison, with the potential for a life sentence, a fine of up to $250,000, and a lifetime of supervised release. He will also be required to register as a sex offender under the Sex Offender Registration and Notification Act.
The investigation was a collaborative effort between the FBI, Homeland Security Investigations, the Maui Police Department, and the U.S. Secret Service. FBI Special Agent in Charge Steven Merrill emphasized the gravity of the situation, stating, “We thank Maui Police Department…for their assistance in protecting Hawaii’s keiki.” Sentencing is scheduled for September 7, 2022.
