Boston – Grimy Times has learned that Brazilian national Lucas Henrique Moreira DePaiva, 22, has been sentenced to a staggering 18-month federal prison term for his role in a conspiracy to sell firearms without a license. The sentence was handed down by U.S. District Court Judge Leo T. Sorokin on July 22, 2024, with two years of supervised release to follow upon his release from prison.
DePaiva, who was unlawfully living in Massachusetts, pleaded guilty to one count of conspiracy to engage in the business of dealing firearms without a license and one count of engaging in the business of dealing firearms without a license. His sentence is part of a broader effort to crack down on illegal firearm sales across the state.
Between Feb. 28, 2024, and Sept. 17, 2024, DePaiva sold 15 firearms on 10 separate occasions in exchange for cash. The illegal transactions also included ammunition and magazines. In February 2024, he conspired with another individual to sell one of these firearms.
United States Attorney Leah B. Foley; Bryan DiGirolamo, Acting Special Agent in Charge of the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF); Michael J. Krol, Special Agent in Charge of Homeland Security Investigations; and Patricia H. Hyde, Field Office Director for U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement’s Enforcement and Removal Operations, announced the sentencing today.
Key assistance in the investigation was provided by the Massachusetts State Police and the Weymouth and Malden Police Departments. Assistant U.S. Attorneys Michael J. Crowley and John Reynolds of the Organized Crime & Gang Unit prosecuted the case, ensuring justice for the community.
