New Bedford’s streets are no longer safe for dealers as two of its most notorious figures face federal charges for a massive fentanyl distribution ring. Jose Santiago, 43, and Samuel Rodriguez, 39, have been charged with conspiracy to distribute controlled substances, including deadly fentanyl, which could send them to prison for up to 20 years.
The duo’s criminal histories are long and violent. Santiago, once known as the ‘Drug King of New Bedford,’ has a rap sheet that includes state convictions for drug distribution and firearms possession, federal conspiracy charges, and a staggering sentence of 15-20 years in prison for controlled substance trafficking. Rodriguez, a serial offender with multiple convictions for assault, battery, resisting arrest, and drug offenses, faces up to eight years in prison for his involvement.
The investigation into Santiago and Rodriguez began early this year, revealing their alleged use of at least 10 storage units across New Bedford and other locations. They’re accused of using these units to store drugs and conduct deals, moving operations frequently to avoid law enforcement scrutiny. The investigation culminated in the seizure of significant amounts of fentanyl, cocaine, cutting agents, and drug-making equipment.
Search warrants executed at various locations yielded a treasure trove of evidence against the defendants. Among the seized items were multiple small presses used to compress fentanyl into finger-sized packages, as well as two large hydraulic presses. The charges against Santiago and Rodriguez carry a potential fine of up to $1 million each.
United States Attorney Leah B. Foley; Stephen Belleau, Acting Special Agent in Charge of the Drug Enforcement Administration; and Jason Thody, Chief of the New Bedford Police Department, announced the charges. This case is another blow against organized crime and drug trafficking operations in Massachusetts, highlighting the ongoing efforts to combat the fentanyl crisis.
