A Mason City man has been sentenced to federal prison after pleading guilty to possessing a firearm while being a methamphetamine user.
Brett Wetter, 46, of Mason City, received the prison term on September 27, 2021 after a guilty plea to possession of a firearm by a drug user.
According to a plea agreement, Wetter admitted to possessing 10 guns while being a methamphetamine user.
The sentence was handed down by United States District Court Chief Judge Leonard T. Strand in Sioux City.
Wetter was sentenced to 21 months’ imprisonment and must also serve a 3-year term of supervised release after the prison term. There is no parole in the federal system.
Wetter is currently being held in the United States Marshal’s custody until he can be transported to a federal prison.
The case was prosecuted by Assistant United States Attorney Jack Lammers and was investigated by the North Central Iowa Drug Task Force, the Cerro Gordo Sheriff’s Office, the Mason City Police Department, and the Iowa Division of Narcotics Enforcement.
