Bank Robbery Suspect Caught in Texas
A shocking case of bank robbery has unfolded in Austin, Texas. Brian Anthony Whitford, 37, is facing charges in connection with two bank robberies and an escape from a halfway house.
According to authorities, Whitford escaped from a halfway house in Del Valle, Texas, on April 13, 2015. Following his escape, he allegedly robbed the Compass Bank on South Congress Avenue and attempted to rob the Wells Fargo Bank on Guadalupe Street.
The stolen funds from Compass Bank are estimated to be around $3,700. This is not the first time Whitford has been involved in bank robberies, as he was previously convicted of robbing the same two financial institutions in April 2010.
Whitford’s conviction in 2010 led to a 71-month federal prison sentence. He now faces up to 20 years in federal prison for each bank robbery charge and up to five years in federal prison for the escape charge.
A joint investigation by the FBI and the United States Marshals Service, with assistance from the Austin and San Antonio Police Departments, led to Whitford’s apprehension in San Antonio.
Assistant United States Attorneys Ashley Hoff and Gregg Sofer are prosecuting the case, which serves as a reminder of the importance of law enforcement cooperation in solving crimes.
A federal criminal complaint is merely an accusation and should not be considered as evidence of guilt. Whitford is presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
The case is a stark reminder of the ongoing efforts by law enforcement agencies to combat bank robberies and other financial crimes.
